Designed to introduce pilots to contest flying in the Omarama area. Tasks are designed to be safe and fun. The tasks will be set so that they can be flown within easy glide of well known airstrips. This allows new or visiting pilots to easily learn around ten landout airstrips to cover the whole contest area.
The task will be set each suitable thermal day before 9am.
A map of the contest area is available. It is a 1:250,000 A3 size PDF.
The waypoints list for the contest is available as a SeeYou CUP file as used by LXNav, XCSoar, etc. Download from the waypoints tab.
The current task can be downloaded as an XCSoar task file. It can be viewed on the task page.
Grand Prix style scoring. 6 points for the win, 4 points for second, 3 for third, 2 for fourth, 1 point for all other competitors who complete the task. Best three results over the season.
In the case of a tie at the end of the series, the highest average speed for the scored days is the winner.
To simplify starts and finishes, all starts will be from a 5km cylinder around Omarama airfield. Start height is not limited, but can affect finish height. Maximum height lost between start and finish is 3280ft (1000 meters). No limit to the number of starts attempted.
Finishes use a 3km cylinder around Omarama airfield. Finish height minimum is 2500ft AMSL. Finish closes at sunset (not ECT).
For simplicity, the only penalty is disqualification. Failure to get a fix in the observation zone, excess loss of height over the task, finishing below the minimum height, or finishing after sunset, will invalidate the flight.
The turnpoint list used for this contest is different to the Omarama Contest Turnpoint list from GNZ. The current Sprint Series turnpoint list can be downloaded from the waypoints tab.
The observation zone used for turnpoints is a 500 meter radius cylinder.
